The seconds passed like minutes as doubt gathered in Sydney Drevlow’s mind.

The Hopkins freshman watched as Edina senior Maggie Wagner took off with a 22.4-second lead built on Day 1 of the Nordic skiing state championships at Giants Ridge.

“I thought it was too much of a gap,” Drevlow said.

She kept grinding throughout the 5,000-meter race and caught Wagner on the course’s final uphill climb.

“It was a hilly course, and people either love it or hate it,” Drevlow said. “I love hills.”

Drevlow’s winning time of 33 minutes, 40.2 seconds made her the Star Tribune’s Metro Girls’ Nordic Skier of the Year and means Nordic racers will be pursuing her for years to come. Hopkins coach Brett Schulze believes the precocious ninth-grader will take the target in stride.

“She is very determined and loves to compete,” Schulze said. “She will make herself hurt in practice to get better.”

Few turn the pain into gain like Drevlow. Her Nordic title came three months after she placed second in the Class 3A cross-country meet.

“It’s fun to go fast,” Drevlow said. “In order to do that, there is going to be pain. But I like the feeling of accomplishment after a hard workout.”

Coaches have encouraged Drevlow to tweak her summer workouts and incorporate roller skiing. To this point, she has preferred mountain biking and running.

“I’m going to try roller skiing,” Drevlow said. “I’m not good at it.”

She does her best work on the snow.
